The Ministry of Education and Higher Education
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education is the government ministry responsible for the creation of educational plans for Jordanian curricula development at all levels of formal education. An official government partner to the RCE, the Ministry’s involvement in all levels of formal education, from primary to higher, should prove a major strength to the RCE. It is the official vehicle for the actual implementation of new educational and strategy concepts within the public educational system of Jordan. The ministry’s role and experience in teacher training as well as its role in the implementation of the ERfKE program (Education Reform for a Knowledge Economy, a program for the design and implementation of a new curriculum and for the creation of learner centered education) are particularly relevant to the work of the RCE.
IUCN-WESCANA
The IUCN (The World Conservation Union) is the world’s largest conservation organization and is a union of government agencies and NGOs. WESCANA is the regional branch for West and Central Asia and North Africa. The organization seeks to address environmental challenges by acting as a bridge between national and regional/global levels and as a bridge between government and civil society. It furthermore acts to facilitate communication and informational exchange between various regional actors and to act as a neutral platform. Specific to Jordan, the organization is working with regards to water management, and on a regional level through its “Regional Water Programme” has compiled a database for water experts and individuals. Furthermore, the organization has plans to establish its own regional ESD program. It brings to the RCE regional connections to other NGOs and environmental ministries in other countries, as well as valuable experience in consultancy, advocacy, and the raising of public-awareness.
Ministry of Environment
The Ministry of Environment focuses on all issues related to environmental management and policy in Jordan, and environmental law making and enforcement. It has also established a Trade and Environment Committee. The Ministry brings to the RCE a strong knowledge and expertise on all environmental issues in Jordan. It furthermore acts as a bridge between environmental and social/societal issues.
The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature
The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) is a national NGO responsible for the creation and maintenance of natural parks in Jordan. It is also involved in developing environmentally friendly commercial activity for park residents, educational activities, and training programs, notably the Regional Training Program. It is, of course, involved in non-formal education though its parks and publications. The RSCN offers nature teams at schools, and has founded over 1000 conservation clubs at local schools, and has prepared ESD manuals for the Ministry of Education. It has plans for as a regional project on education for sustainable development focusing on pupils age 10-15. The RSCN brings to the RCE strength and experience in environmental advocacy and community cooperation.
Jordan University Department of Education
The Jordan University Department of Education functions are educational research, curriculum development, and teacher training. The Department’s involvement in the RCE adds to the research capacity directly related to the development and assessment of new teaching methods. Furthermore, being one of the main sources of new teachers in Jordan, it can act as a major conduit for the introduction of ideas regarding sustainable development and ESD, into future generations of teaching professionals.
Queen Rania Al-Abduallah Center for Environmental Science and Technology is part of the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST)The center has a formal environmental educational program, along with programs to provide vocational training, seminars, workshops, and public lectures relating to the environment. The center brings to the RCE further research capacity and consultancy capabilities, along with technical expertise with regards to environmental science and technology. Furthermore the center brings with it valuable experience in collaboration with universities and it works to promote effective environmental education programs in multiple levels of education.
Private Schools Educational And Cultural Council
Responding to an identified need for a forum where teachers and educational leaders could meet and exchange experiences and expertise, with the aim of fulfilling the objectives of developing the educational process, disseminating educational thought and introducing sound applications the PSC was established and has a current membership of 44 Private Schools. It aims among others to develop ties among private schools, encourage teachers to be creative and promote their roles in society, exchange experiences in all spheres, hold workshops, seminars and research sessions. With this set of objectives as well as the unique membership structure the PSC is ideally suited as a primary partner in the RCE. The schools can be partners in the RCE activities and benefit from RCE teaching materials and projects. Through the RCE experiences and new research outcomes can find its way to a wider audience and the PSC in turn has access to cutting edge international research in education and teacher training.
The Jordan River Foundation
The Jordan River Foundation is an NGO with rural community development projects, urban development pilot projects, and child protection programs, all with a strong emphasis on the empowerment of women and young people. It brings to the RCE an expertise in working within communities, particularly those which are disenfranchised and have limited access to services. Its poverty alleviation and income generation projects, along with its expertise and perspective on economic development, bring a vital standpoint, set of skills, and focus to the RCE, particularly in one of its central goals of, bringing ESD to all. The foundation also adds valuable capacity for the non-formal education of groups at a community level, that the RCE might otherwise lack access to, and as a source of training for young people.
JOHUD ZENID
ZENID (The Queen Zein Al Sharaf Institute for Development), is the representative arm chosen to sit on the RCE for JOHUD (Jordanian Hasemite Fund for Human Development). ZENID itself is a research and training institute, with different branches, one of which focuses on training local actors, such as community leaders, teachers, social workers and others. Another branch conducts research, and information management and dissemination on a whole range of development issues, and another branch does the same with gender specific issues. Having ZENID on the RCE ensures that the social pillar of sustainable development within the center is taken seriously and is strong. Furthermore, beyond ZENID, JOHUD runs an extensive decentralized network of 50 community development centers, which run various programs such as MAKANA, and this network provides a means though which to assess local educational conditions and community needs.
JCPP
The Jordan Cleaner Production Program is a governmental/non-governmental cooperation program that aims to bring into being cleaner production in cooperation with industries, through the use of in-plant assessments, cleaner production technical investment, information dissemination, training, and policy advice. As is a consortium of 9 governmental ministries, universities and NGOs, it is an organization with a similar working structure to the RCE, and brings valued expertise in that regard. It also brings to the RCE extensive knowledge and expertise in consultancy, training, and policy advice on industry, and furthermore, is a useful source of connections to local industry and other business.
Hans Seidel Foundation
The Hanns Seidel Foundation is a regional cooperation program which focuses on environmental education and training in cooperation with NGOs in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. It brings to the RCE project expertise and modules that can be adapted to other courses. In examples particular to Jordan, in 1998 in cooperation with the RSCN, it facilitated the first ever regional training assessment, to determine the need for regional training with regards to environmental management. The resulting regional training unit at the RSCN, which offers high quality training programs in fields such as management of protected areas and eco-tourism development, to actors across the Middle East, is a joint project. The foundation has also worked in cooperation with ZENID.
