LEADERSHIP COURSE: MEDIA AND REPORTING ON ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE
November 24 – 28, 2008, Amman – Jordan
This is the second in a series of leadership courses on the role of media in the new global world order organized jointly by the Amman Office of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and United Nations University – International Leadership Institute.
As in developing countries expansion of their economic activities is seen as crucial, consideration for environmental conservation often receives a low priority. Therefore, environmental topics may have an important place in the media agendas of developed countries, in developing countries these questions are less often addressed in the public discourse. For that reason this media leadership course focuses on environmental questions such as climate change, energy supply, water resources etc. The objective of the course is to build capacity and knowledge amongst young journalists from developing countries on environmental issues. Among issues to be discussed are how environmental damage has direct effects on people’s lives in very different parts of the world and how interdependent countries and peoples are coping in this regard.
The target groups of this leadership course focusing on climate change and environment would be young professionals, experienced professionals and the academic community. The course including sessions aiming at offering a broad overview on environment and climate change related issues will conclude with an intensive media training workshop for about 20 participants from across the world.
The following issues will be examined closely:
• Leadership In Media: The Challenge of Informing
• Reporting on Environment Issues – On the Search for Quality and Relevance
o Environmental Impacts of Climate Change
o Water Resources and Climate Change
o Climate Change and Biodiversity
o Energy Security and Climate Change
o Prospects for International Consensus on Climate Change Measures
The selection progress for participating in this leadership course will be rigorous and one approach is to ask participants to write a brief essay on the course concept and what they would benefit from it. This will enable an assessment of language proficiency, experience and commitment of potential candidates for the course. In the end of the course certificates are going to be handed over to participants proving their full participation in the entire leadership course. The post course activities would include promoting networking and continuing interest in media development for the duration of their careers.
