The planned conference aims to understand the impact of climate change on the region, raise awareness for the remedies that exist, and promote dialogue and policy changes on climate change in the Arab countries.



Specific Objectives:

Support civil society engagement in formulating climate change positions and policies
Increase knowledge about climate change amongst activists in the region
Identify main challenges and potential areas of intervention especially regarding awareness raising and policies
Debate some new issues and concerns especially adaptation and mitigation in the region
Promote regional networking and exchange of experience regarding climate change.


Target Group:

Environmental and civil society activists in the Arab Middle East
Scientists and researchers who are involved in issues related to climate change
Policy and decision makers who can have influence on decisions relevant to combat climate change and its impacts
The general public in the Arab Middle East who will be subjected to media coverage and awareness building on climate change


Time Frame:

The conference will be organized in Amman/Jordan on 21-22 October, 2008. It will host up to 50 Arab activists and environmentalists who will be engaged in debates and discussion around specific climate change issues of concern to the Arab Middle East.

The conference which will last for two days will consist of different panels organized by different partners of the Heinrich Boell Stiftung partners in the region.
